Kurdish parties discuss forming government in Iraq’s Erbil

Leaders of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) and the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) met in Erbil yesterday to discuss the political crisis in the region and the formation of a government.

The meeting was attended by KDP President Massoud Barzani and PUK leader Kosrat Rasul Ali in an effort to end the dispute between the two main Kurdish parties.

Barzani said in a statement after the meeting that it has addressed obstacles facing the political process in the Kurdistan region, and stressed that the two parties are committed to working hard to institutionalise and strengthen the region’s institutions taking into account the Kurdish people’s interests.

The PUK delegation, led by Rasul Ali, included two members of the party’s political bureau informed Barzani of the party’s final position on forming a government.

PUK political bureau met at a later time and is expected to issue a statement on its outcomes.

The political bureaus of both parties are scheduled to meet today.
