A military court in Algeria sentenced the brother of ousted President Abdul-Aziz Bouteflika on Monday evening to 15 years in prison on charges of conspiracy against the state, news agencies have reported.

The same court also convicted two ex-intelligence chiefs on a similar charge.

Boujomaa Ghsheer, the lawyer of a fourth suspect in the same case, confirmed the reports about the sentences.

Ghsheer said that his client, Lowiza Hannoun, the Secretary General of the Labour Party, was sentenced to 15 years in a previous hearing by the Court of First Instance and her term was reduced to three years.

She is expected to be released soon.

The once-mighty Said Bouteflika, 62, was long seen as the real power behind the presidency after his brother suffered a debilitating stroke in 2013, said Al-Sharq Al-Awsat.
