Mauritania’s President Mohamed Ould El-Ghazaouani received the head of the Hamas Political Bureau, Ismail Haniyeh, in the capital Nouakchott on Monday, Anadolu news agency has reported. A delegation from the Palestinian Islamic Resistance Movement flew to Mauretania from Morocco, where it had what was described by one commentator as a “state visit”.

Haniyeh, said the official Mauritanian news agency, received an official invitation to visit the African country. The Mauritanian parliament called on the International Criminal Court to investigate Israeli “genocides” after the occupation state’s latest military offensive against the Gaza Strip.

During his visit to Morocco, Haniyeh met with the head of state, government officials, leaders of political parties, and government and non-governmental organisations.
