Egypt’s former Minister of Irrigation Mohamed Nasr Allam has announced that Egypt is currently suffering severe water shortages, RT reported on Friday.
Allam cited that Egypt faces a problem concerning affording the amount of water required by Egyptian farmers for their crops.
He explained that Egypt’s annual need for irrigation water is about 105 billion square metres, noting that a vast amount of this water is obtained through recycling sewage.
The former minister also indicated that the Ethiopian dam has a large number of technical faults, and Cairo completely rejected Ethiopian plans to build dams in 2010.
Meanwhile, current Egyptian Irrigation Minister Mohamed Abdel-Ati stated that the shortages of water resulting from the Ethiopian dam would lead 200,000 Egyptian families to lose their sources of income, Al Arabiya news website reported.
