US Republican senators back bill to label settlement products ‘Made in Israel’

TEL AVIV, ISRAEL - JUNE 13: An Israeli vendor serves a tasting of Makhpela, a blend of Cabernet and Merlot made by Jewish settlers in the West Bank settlement of Kiryat Arba, at the country's first international wine exhibition June 13, 2006 in Tel Aviv, Israel. Annual wine consumption has doubled in recent years to some 7.5 liters per capita amongst non-Muslim Israelis. While this is considerably less than the 60 liters each Frenchman or Italian consumes annually, it represents a marked increase in local terms, which has been matched by the development of international quality wines from both local major producers and boutique wineries. A number of Republican senators are backing a bill that would see the products of illegal Israeli settlements labelled as “Made in Israel”, Israeli newspaper The Jerusalem Post reported on Saturday.

One of the last orders of the former US President Donald Trump required products of Israeli settlements to be labelled as “Made in Israel”.

Seven senators from Trump’s Republican party are seeking to turn this order into law. Senator Tom Cotton introduced the action under the Anti-BDS Labeling Act.

The Jerusalem Post disclosed that the bill has no chance of passing due to the Democrats’ domination over the Senate.

This comes on the heels of US ice cream maker Ben & Jerry’s decision to pull back its products from Israeli settlements.
