Thousands of pro-military protesters gathered in the Sudanese capital, Khartoum, yesterday calling to dissolve the transitional government led by Prime Minister Abdullah Hamdok.
This came days after pro-military protesters began a sit-in near the Republican Palace calling on the military to take over full power and the formation of a government of technocrats.
Meanwhile, the Sudanese police prevented a group of protesters from entering the government headquarters where Hamdok held an emergency meeting to discuss the political crisis, which he had described as the “worst” since the overthrow of the regime of President Omar Al-Bashir in 2019.
“We came here to overthrow the civilian government, because it failed, and to call on the military to take over this transitional period,” Taher Fadl Al-Mawla, a protester, told AFP.
However, opponents of the protests accuse the army and security forces leadership of organising the protests and say the sit-in is a “coup” in a country that has known many coups.
