The US Defence Department said on Tuesday that it is not accusing any party of the assassination attempt on Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kadhimi earlier this week.

Pentagon spokesman John Kirby said that it is investigating the hypothesis that Iranian-backed militias carried out the attack on Al-Kadhimi. However, it does not allege that anyone specific is responsible.

The announcement by the Pentagon came a day after the US Central Command accused pro-Iran militias of planning to assassinate Al-Kadhimi.
