Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian said yesterday that his country welcomes the reopening of Saudi Arabia and Iran’s embassies in each other’s countries, adding that the way is open for Riyadh to restore diplomatic relations with Tehran.
Speaking at the National Conference on Iran and Neighbouring Countries in Tehran, Abdollahian said one of the main principles governing the government’s neighbourhood policy is linking relations to neighbours to the issue of negotiations to lift the sanctions imposed on Tehran so that neighbours do not feel distanced.
“We do not welcome the idea of adding new members from the region to the talks, but we keep our neighbours informed of the issues,” Fars news agency quoted the top diplomat as saying.
Abdollahian said the current government would like to give priority to cooperation and interaction with neighbours, and to improve bilateral relations with them to achieve this goal.
“The neighbour has legal and international rights, including good neighbourliness, non-interference in internal affairs, non-aggression on territorial integrity, and respect for the independence and sovereignty of states,” he said.
