Power in Sudan won’t be handed over except to an elected government or if a national consensus is forged, the Chairman of the country’s Transitional Sovereignty Council, Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, announced yesterday.

Speaking to officers of the Sixth Infantry Division in Darfur’s northern city of Al-Fasher, Al-Burhan said that it was the armed forces, all regular forces and political parties’ responsibility to hand over power elected individuals or those appointed through political consensus.

“We want to hand over power to Sudanese citizens elected by the people to rule Sudan,” he reiterated.

Praising his army, Al-Burhan described the military’s sacrifices as the “main support for achieving peace and stability in the country.”

Since 25 October, Sudan has been witnessing protests against measures taken by the council’s leader Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, including imposing state emergency, dissolving former ministers and councils, as well as arresting officials. The measures were repeatedly criticised by western nations who have called for the restoration of the civilian-led government and the end of a crackdown on protests.
