Gaza’s Ministry of Agriculture expects this year’s wheat harvest to be of a better quality than that of last season as a result of the high rainfall.

This is positive for Palestinians in the Strip who, like residents of much of the Middle East, have seen wheat prices increase since Russia’ invasion of Ukraine.

The Gaza Strip has 12,000 dunums (2,965 acres) of wheat fields with an expected production of 4,300 tonnes, according to the ministry. This, however, only provides for the needs of approximately 3-4 per cent of the enclave’s inhabitants.

Farmers usually harvest barley before wheat because it grows faster, while the wheat harvest varies in time depending on the location of the farm in the Strip. The earliest crops are ripe in the south, while those in the north of the Strip take longer.
