Russia discusses normalising ties between Turkiye, Syria

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov discussed with his Turkish counterpart, Mevlut Cavusoglu, the normalisation of relations between Ankara and Damascus, on the sidelines of the G20 ministerial meeting in the Indian capital, New Delhi.

The Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement: “There is special attention on the work of the countries of the region interested in normalising Turkish-Syrian relations.”

“This is occurring in conjunction with more joint efforts to eliminate the terrorist threat.”

On 16 January, Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Turkish counterpart, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, discussed the normalisation of relations between Syria and Turkiye.

The two sides highlighted the importance of joint action between Russia, Turkiye and Iran within the framework of the Astana peace process to reach a settlement in Syria.
