Israeli opposition leader Yair Lapid has stressed his support for any deal that would lead to the release of prisoners of war held in Gaza. Lapid made his remarks yesterday during a meeting with representatives of the families of the prisoners, according to the Israeli newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth.
Lapid emphasised that the opposition is committed to supporting any measure, regardless of its feasibility, that would facilitate the return of the prisoners. He acknowledged that while there may be room for improvement in handling the situation, it’s a duty to return them.
Earlier on the same day, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that there would be no ceasefire in Gaza unless the prisoners are returned from the Strip.
According to the Israeli army, a total of 241 Israeli citizens have been held in Gaza since 7 October. Four have been released., while nearly 60 have been killed in Israel’s indiscriminate bombing of Gaza.
The Palestinian resistance has said it will release all prisoners of war in return for the nearly 10,000 Palestinians detained by the occupation.
