Sarajevo Film Festival honours Palestinian director Elia Suleiman

Palestinian Director Elia Suleiman was honoured by the Sarajevo Film Festival with the Honorary Heart of Sarajevo for his contribution to the film industry on Friday.

In a post on X on 16 August, the organisation wrote: “It is our honor to award this year’s Honorary Heart of Sarajevo to the distinguished Palestinian director Elia Suleiman and to celebrate his exceptional contribution to the world of cinema.”


Suleiman said it may have been his fourteenth appearance at the festival, adding that he’s “always loving it, always happy” but Friday was “special”.

Hollywood actor, film director and producer Meg Ryan late yesterday, Reuters reported.

Hollywood actress and director Meg Ryan was also honoured, alongside US Director Alexander Payne and American actor and producer John Turturro.

“It’s an award in recognition of outstanding contribution to the world of cinema, to her incredible talents,” festival director Jovan Marjanović said before handing Ryan a silver heart-shaped award.

The Sarajevo Film Festival, a movie showcase spreading from Vienna to Istanbul, was created by a group of film enthusiasts towards the end of the Bosnian war 30 years ago. It will showcase 240 films in total this year.
