The MPs of the Jordanian Islamic Action Front officially announced their boycott of a reception held by the British Ambassador in the capital, Amman, several days ago.

The invitation sent by the ambassador to 138 MPs was attended by 45 new members of the Jordanian parliament.

Most of those present at the ambassador’s reception were new faces in parliament, and their acceptance of the invitation caused controversy among Jordanians on social media after a statement by the media spokesperson for the Islamic movement MPs, Yanal Fraihat, highlighted their refusal to participate due to its illegitimacy.

The British Embassy did not announce the reasons for the invitation, but Fraihat confirmed it was sent on the occasion of the British foreign secretary’s visit to Amman. He considered the meeting “inappropriate” and that invitations should have been sent through the general secretariat of the House of Representatives, in coordination with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The British Embassy, which was immediately accused of trying to “interfere in Jordan’s internal and foreign affairs,” did not comment.

The MPs who visited the British ambassador’s reception have not yet become MPs in the constitutional sense, as the parliamentary session is still to be held, and the elected MPs have not yet taken their constitutional oath.

Most of those present were members of centrist parties, who also did not comment on the issue.
