Qatar today welcomed Syrian President Ahmed Al-Sharaa’s signing of a declaration outlining the main provisions of Syria’s interim constitution.

In a written statement, Qatar’s Foreign Ministry expressed hope that this step, described as “important and historic”, would provide a solid foundation for managing the transitional period and establishing an institutional, just and liberal state in line with the aspirations of the Syrian people.

The statement highlighted key elements of the declaration, including the principle of separation of powers, the formation of a committee to draft a permanent constitution, guarantees for transitional justice, protection of freedoms and rights for all Syrians, and a commitment to the unity of the country and its people.

These provisions, it noted, serve as a starting point for rebuilding Syria on new foundations.

Stressing the importance of local, regional and international cooperation to achieve progress and stability, the statement reaffirmed Qatar’s full support for Syria’s sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity, as well as the Syrian people’s aspirations for freedom, development and prosperity.

Al-Sharaa signed the declaration yesterday, outlining the main provisions of the interim constitution.
