Israel’s bombing campaign since October 2023 completely destroyed 81 mosques in the city of Rafah, in southern Gaza, the Rafah Municipality said yesterday.

In a statement posted on its Facebook page, the municipality reported that “81 mosques were entirely demolished in Rafah, while the remaining mosques suffered severe damage during the genocide and war of ethnic cleansing.”

On 19 January, Mayor of Rafah, Ahmed Al-Soufi, declared the city a disaster zone due to the extensive destruction caused by over eight months of intensified Israeli military operations.

He also called for a comprehensive emergency plan to rebuild the city and restore its damaged infrastructure.

Israel launched renewed air strikes on the city and across the enclave overnight killing over 220 Palestinians.
