Iran’s Foreign Ministry has summoned the German ambassador and the UK chargé d’affaires in protest against a resolution submitted by both countries at the United Nations, Arabi21 reported, citing Iranian media.
Iranian state television reported that the Foreign Ministry summoned the European diplomats to formally convey Tehran’s objection to the resolution presented at the UN Human Rights Council.
The Foreign Ministry also condemned what it described as the “misuse of human rights issues” by Germany and the UK “to exert pressure on the Iranian people”.
The ministry added that Germany and Britain, which it accused of supporting “Israel’s genocide against Palestinians in Gaza,” were not in a position to advocate for human rights.
On Tuesday, Germany and the UK submitted a draft resolution to the UN Human Rights Council calling for the extension of the mandate of the fact-finding committee on Iran, which was formed following the protests that erupted across the country in late 2022.
Iran witnessed a wave of demonstrations beginning on 14 September 2022 after the death of Kurdish-Iranian woman Mahsa Amini while in the custody of the Iranian morality police.
