Egypt: Son imprisons mum for her pension

A man has been detained in Egypt after video footage circulated online showing his elderly mum held without food or water in his house.

The 57-year-old had apparently trapped his mother in order to gain access to her 4,000 Egyption pound ($225) monthly pension to support his four wives.

The elderly woman’s neighbours had been smuggling food to her under the metal door to the area she was being held. It is believe she was detained for a year in Sidi Salem, in the Kafr El Sheikh Governorate.

Her son had gained power of attorney over her affairs and refused to allow her daughters to visit her.

Authorities have arrested him pending an investigation.
