Israel has agreed to increase its exports of natural gas to Egypt, the Globes reported yesterday, citing sources from the Israeli Ministry of National Infrastructure, Energy and Water Resources.
Israel is already exporting gas to Egypt through the Ashkelon-Arish subsea pipeline, but new exports would use the pipeline used to export gas to Jordan.
This new export route has been approved following the growing demand for Israeli natural gas in Egypt, which will increase gas exports to Egypt by more than 50 per cent, the Globes said.
Jordan currently receives three billion cubic metres (BCM) of gas annually from Israel under an agreement signed in 2016.
Meanwhile, Egypt imports 5 BCM of gas annually via the Ashkelon-Arish pipeline, and it is expected to import an additional 2.5-3 BCM via Jordan.
This could rise to 4 BCM in subsequent years, the news site added.
Gas will begin flowing from Israel to Egypt via Jordan later this month.
