Libya’s UN-backed government in the capital has suffered a major blow following a vote of no confidence yesterday by the country’s eastern parliament.

The vote by members of the Tobruk-based House of Representatives rejected the Tripoli administration’s proposed line-up for a government of national unity.

Sixty-one parliamentarians rejected the UN-backed Government of National Accord, one parliamentarian voted confidence in the government and 39 abstained.

MPs reportedly described the government’s selection as “unbalanced and flawed”.

The parliament, in a statement approved by lawmakers who attended the session, gave prime minister-designate Fayez al-Sarraj a “last chance” to present a new line-up for a unity government within 10 days.
