US calls on Cairo to put an end to political detentions

February 3, 2014 at 10:52 am

The White House’s Official Press Secretary Jay Carney announced that the US administration is calling on Egypt to put an end to political detentions, Anadolu news agency reported.

Carney pointed out that despite the support of millions of Egyptians, the current government has taken several measures that are in opposition to the most basic principles of democracy.

In a press conference, the American official said that US president Barack Obama has been closely following what is going on in Egypt. He affirmed that Cairo is still a top priority on Obama’s agenda.

According to Carney, the latest visit of US Secretary of State John Kerry to Cairo was proof of American support for Egypt and the Egyptian people.

He added that the visit was also illustrative of Washington’s commitment to the democratic transition in Egypt, and the US will continue discussing this issue with the current government.
