A fundraising campaign is being organised to pay the fines of protesters who were detained on 25 April which amount to 100,000 Egyptian pounds ($11,263) each, the Chairman of Egypt’s Al-Karama party, Amin Iskandar.

Iskandar told Al-Mesryoon news site that “the court fined the youths thousands of Egyptian pounds to deliver a message to their families that they cannot protect their children.”

He urged the international and civil society organisations to help raise the funds to save young people from detention.

On Tuesday, the Dokki Misdemeanour Court accepted appeals by 47 defendants, reducing the ruling against them from five years in prison to a fine of 100,000 Egyptian pounds ($11,263).

A court in Cairo had sentenced 101 protesters to five years in jail after they were arrested demonstrating against the country’s agreement to return two Red Sea islands to Saudi Arabia. It also issued fines of 100,000 Egyptian pounds to 78 demonstrators

The prosecution accused 111 people who were arrested in the neighbourhoods of Agouza and Dokki of holding demonstrations without a permit, joining a terrorist group and disturbing the peace and security.
