The Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) shelled with artillery the mountainous border areas in the Soran district near Erbil, in the Iraqi Kurdistan, injuring five people.

Mayor of Soran, Qurmang Ezzat, said the Iranian artillery shelling against the border area began yesterday morning and resulted in the injury of five civilians, including three children.

Ezzat told the Anadolu Agency that the Iranian forces continue to bomb the area with heavy guns causing damages to the agricultural land.

He explained that Iran was bombing the area where members of the Kurdish Democratic Party of Iran (KDPI) are present after they intensifies their military activity in the city of Mahabad, near the Iraqi border and other areas.

On Friday, Iran’s IRNA news agency quoted an IRGC official in the city of Mahabad as saying that clashes broke out between the Iranian forces and members of KDPI who had visited the area to promote the party.

KDPI Secretary-General Mustafa Hijri said in previous statements that members of his party have clashed with the Iranian forces in Western Azerbaijan which resulted in the killing of 20 Iranian soldiers and six party members.
