Lebanese President Michel Aoun yesterday called for liberating his country from corruption and returning it to the path of advancement and prosperity.

“As we fought the enemy and liberated the land, we must together liberate the state from corruption and return Lebanon to the path of advancement and prosperity,” Aoun said on Twitter.

“Only the unity of the Lebanese will achieve reform and restore dignity of life to our society,” he added.

Each year on 25 May, Lebanon marks Liberation Day to mark Israel’s withdrawal from the south of the country in 2000.

Lebanon has been experiencing an economic crisis described as the worst in its history, exacerbated by the coronavirus pandemic and the Beirut port explosion in August last year which left 300,000 people homeless.

Due to political differences between Aoun and Prime Minister-designate Saad Hariri, the latter has yet to form a government since being tasked with doing so in October, leaving the country in limbo.
