Cautious calm prevails in northern Syria after Sochi summit

A state of cautious calm has prevailed in cities and towns in north-western Syria where no Russian warplanes have been monitored as the summit that brought Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin together came to an end.

Local sources told Aram news site that apart from some bombings in Jabal Al-Zawiya, south of Idlib, no major escalation has been recorded.

The meeting between Erdogan and Putin ended in Sochi yesterday afternoon, without statements being issued about Syria or the ceasefire in Idlib.

The summit came after a major Russian military escalation in Idlib governorate, which has recently extended to the western countryside of Aleppo and Afrin, north of Aleppo.

On 5 March 2020, Turkey and Russia agreed to implement a ceasefire in Idlib, however since then, both sides have exchanged accusations that they have not fully implemented the terms of the truce.
