Iraqi Member of Parliament Khaled Al-Mafraji, leader of the Coalition of National Forces MP a delegation that groups mainly Sunni leaders, reportedly said in a statement: “The attempt by some political parties to negotiate with outgoing Prime Minister Nouri Al-Maliki and give him guarantees that he will not be prosecuted as long as he does not run for a third term, is unacceptable and will not be accepted.”
Al-Mafraji told the Anadolu news agency that “there is no text or article in the Iraqi constitution that allows for guarantees to be given to Al-Maliki or any person who has complaints and lawsuits against them once they leave office.”
He added: “It’s up to the Iraqi people. After this calamity and suffering and displacement, the situation is very difficult today, more than one-third of Iraq is suffering in tragic situations and they give him what he wants.”
The leader of the Coalition of National Forces continued: “This is very difficult and should be discussed not only by us, but by the National Alliance because the issue opposes the provisions and articles of the constitution.”
Al-Mafraji said: “It is up to the political leaders to discuss the matter in the first instance to find a way to satisfy the Iraqi people who will not allow their rights to be given up.”
