Mohammad Badie, the spiritual leader of the Muslim Brotherhood, and his deputy, Khairat Al-Shater, have appealed against the recent verdicts handed down to them and 12 other Muslim Brotherhood leaders and members.
The defence handed a number of memoranda with reasons to appeal the rule issued by the Cairo Criminal Court, headed by Judge Moataz Khafagy, in the case, which decreed the execution of four detainees, the punishment to some degree of 14 of the group’s leaders, including Badie’s life imprisonment.
The Cairo Criminal Court decreed the execution of: Mohammed Abdel Azim Bashmawi and his brother Mustafa Abdel Azim Bashmawi, as well as Atef Abdul Jalil Mohammed and Abdul Rahim Mohammed Abdul Rahi, all leaders of the Muslim Brotherhood.
The court handed down life terms to 14 Muslim Brotherhood leaders, including: Mohammed Badie, Khairat Al-Shater, Rashad Bayoumi, Saad Katatni, Essam El-Erian, Dr Mohamed El-Beltagy, Mohammed Mahdi Akef, Osama Yassin, Ayman Hodhod, Ahmed Shousha, Hossam Abu Bakr, Mahmoud Zanaty, Rida Fahmy and Mahmoud Effat.
