Loyalists of former President Hosni Mubarak can run in Egypt’s upcoming parliamentary elections, a spokesman for the country’s election commission said.

“The law guarantees the right for all to run [in the polls],” Omar Marwan told reporters on Thursday.

He said former members of Mubarak’s now-defunct National Democratic Party (NDP) have the right to run in the polls.

“The election commission has nothing to do with political affiliations,” he said.

The NDP was dissolved in 2011 following the ouster of Mubarak in a popular revolution.

The spokesman said that dual-nationality candidates can also run in the polls, which will be held in two phases in October and November.

The upcoming parliamentary vote will be the final step of a political “roadmap” imposed by the army in mid-2013 following a coup against elected President Mohamed Morsi.

The roadmap also included a constitutional referendum and a presidential poll, both of which took place last year.
