Two political groups in Egypt have called openly for early elections. The Popular Front against the Muslim Brotherhood Egypt and the Free Congress for Freedom called on Friday for President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi to step down, Anadolu has reported.
“Egypt is being exposed to an unprecedented wave of oppression, suppression and torture from the ruling regime,” said the groups in a joint statement. “Any Egyptian with a free voice is a prisoner on demand… The regime is breathing failure at all levels.”
The groups made their call after two previous attempts within the past two months to get Al-Sisi to step down. The first was made by Strong Egypt, headed by former presidential candidate Abdul-Monem Aboul-Fotouh, and the other was issued by the 6th of April Movement.
Anadolu also reported a wide-scale arrest campaign against activists at the beginning of the week. The campaign is seen as a pre-emptive measure targeting opposition efforts to organise protests on the fifth anniversary of the 25 January Revolution.
