Israeli media reported on Wednesday evening that armed Palestinian fighters engaged in a firefight with Israeli forces in the city of Rafah, in the southern Gaza Strip.
Channel 14 said a Hamas unit emerged from a tunnel and attacked an Israeli force, firing anti-tank missiles. According to the report, three Israeli soldiers were wounded in the exchange, while some of the attackers were killed and others retreated back into the tunnel. Israeli forces have launched a search operation for the remaining fighters.
Helicopters were seen landing in Rafah, while others opened fire in the area as part of the response.
An unnamed Israeli official, quoted by Channel 12, threatened a forceful reaction to the incident.
“We view the Rafah incident very seriously and will not tolerate any attempt to harm our soldiers,” the senior official said.
