Sudanese Prime Minister Dr Kamil Idris on Sunday declared 2026 as the “Year of Peace,” saying his government has clear indications that an end to the conflict is inevitable.
Speaking at a press conference at the Khartoum State Government Secretariat, Idris said the declaration comes within the framework of the National Peace Initiative put forward by his government. He described the initiative as “a purely Sudanese effort” that has received broad regional and international backing, most recently from the International Committee of the Red Cross.
“Peace is a fundamental goal for the government, but it must be a peace of the brave — a peace the Sudanese people deserve, especially since this war was imposed on them,” Idris said. “We have indications that peace is inevitable, and we will continue to guide it until we reach safe harbour.”
The prime minister said the government is currently working on establishing national mechanisms to implement the initiative and called on the media to support and promote it among the public.
Idris acknowledged the scale of challenges facing the country but said the government’s priorities remain focused on citizens’ livelihoods, security and essential services. He outlined plans to expand health centres, hospitals and universities, including the phased return of the University of Khartoum, alongside efforts to improve electricity and water services according to a defined timetable.
