Egypt has welcomed the United States’ decision to designate the Egyptian branch of the Muslim Brotherhood as a terrorist organisation, describing the move as a “pivotal step”.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that classifying the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist Organisation represents a significant development in efforts to combat extremism.
Cairo praised the actions taken by the US administration under President Donald Trump to counter international terrorism and confront terrorist groups, saying the decision aligns with Egypt’s longstanding position on the Muslim Brotherhood.
The ministry noted that Egypt had already designated the group as a terrorist organisation due to what it described as its record of violence, extremism and incitement.
It added that the sacrifices made by Egypt in its fight against terrorism reflect the state’s firm commitment to confronting extremist ideology and violence in order to safeguard national security and protect state institutions and resources.
The statement reaffirmed Egypt’s determination to continue strengthening international cooperation to combat terrorism in all its forms, cut off its ideological and financial sources, and confront extremist organisations that pose a threat to regional and international peace and security.
