Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has warned the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) against undermining agreements reached with the Syrian government last January, saying attempts to sabotage the understandings would not be tolerated.
Erdogan made the remarks on Monday in a speech after chairing a Turkish cabinet meeting at the Presidential Complex in Ankara.
Referring to the understandings between Damascus and the SDF — which Turkey describes as the armed wing of the YPG — Erdogan said: “The recent agreements have opened a new chapter for the Syrian people, and anyone who tries to undermine them will be buried under their rubble.”
He added that Turkey would “stand firmly against all those who profit from bloodshed, fuel conflicts, exploit tensions, and disregard human life”.
Erdogan said Ankara supports peace, stability, harmony and social cohesion across the region, stressing that Turkey cannot feel secure while “fires, conflicts and wars” continue beyond its borders.
He reiterated that Turkey backs steps aimed at establishing peace and stability in Syria, while ensuring the country’s territorial integrity and political unity.
