The US Embassy in Amman has temporarily evacuated its compound in the Jordanian capital on Monday due to a reported “threat”.
On its Facebook page, the embassy said: “Out of an abundance of caution, all personnel at the US Embassy have temporarily departed the Embassy compound due to a threat.”
A US diplomatic source told AFP that the measure is “temporary and precautionary in light of regional developments”.
Earlier on Monday, the embassy warned: “We have indications there may be continued missiles, drones, or rockets in Jordanian airspace in the coming days.”
It advised US citizens to “seek shelter, stay indoors, and avoid falling debris” if such threats occur.
The Jordanian Public Security Directorate also issued a statement on Monday evening, urging residents near the embassy to stay indoors if alarms sound, close their windows, and keep away from them.
The statement emphasised that these “preventive precautionary measures are aimed at ensuring public safety and do not warrant panic among citizens.”
