Iran has dismissed claims by US President Donald Trump that its leadership had sought a ceasefire, describing the remarks as lacking credibility.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei said that Trump’s assertion that “the new Iranian regime leader asked him for a ceasefire” was baseless, adding in remarks reported by Iranian media that such statements “have no credibility.”

Earlier on Wednesday, Trump said that Iran’s new leadership had requested a ceasefire and indicated he would consider such a request only after the Strait of Hormuz is reopened.

On 2nd March, Iran imposed restrictions on maritime traffic through the strait, warning that vessels attempting to pass without coordination could be targeted.

Since 28th February, Israel and the United States have been waging a war against Iran that has resulted in thousands of deaths and injuries, while Tehran has responded by launching missiles and drones toward Israeli-controlled areas.

Iran has also targeted what it describes as American sites and interests in Arab countries; however, some of these attacks have led to deaths, injuries, and damage to civilian property, prompting condemnation from the affected states.
