Iran has rejected threats by US President Donald Trump against its infrastructure, describing them as “’delusional”.

A military spokesman for the Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters, which assumes command during wartime, said Trump’s threats on Monday would not “compensate for America’s disgrace”.

In a statement reported by official media, the spokesman said: “The rude and arrogant rhetoric and baseless threats of the delusional US president will not make up for America’s disgrace and defeat in the West Asia region.”

Earlier on Monday, Trump said the United States could destroy all bridges and power stations in Iran within four hours if Tehran did not end its closure of the Strait of Hormuz.

The US president has repeatedly issued deadlines for Iran to lift the blockade of the strait, warning of attacks on energy facilities and other civilian infrastructure if it fails to comply.

On Sunday, Trump set a deadline of 8pm Eastern Time on Tuesday (0000 GMT Wednesday).
