Tehran has said that threats by US President Donald Trump to impose a “naval blockade” on Iran amount to an illegal war that cannot be won through revengeful actions against the global economy.

In a post on X, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said such a move would ultimately harm the United States itself.

He added: “Can an illegal ‘war of choice’ be won through a ‘revenge of choice’ against the global economy?! Is it ever worthwhile to cut off one’s nose to spite one’s face?!”

Iran and the United States said on Sunday that talks held in Islamabad had ended without a final agreement to end the war, with both sides exchanging blame for the failure to reach a deal.

In the early hours of Wednesday, 8th April, Washington and Tehran announced a two-week truce mediated by Pakistan, ahead of broader negotiations aimed at ending the war, which began on 28 February.

On Sunday, Trump said the US Navy would begin imposing a blockade “on all vessels attempting to enter or leave the Strait of Hormuz”.

US Central Command (CENTCOM) also announced plans to enforce a naval blockade on Iran starting Monday morning.
