US Secretary of State Marco Rubio discussed the situation surrounding Iran and regional security with Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi during a meeting in Washington on Tuesday, the US State Department said.

State Department spokesperson Tommy Pigott said: “Secretary of State Marco Rubio met today with Jordan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Ayman Safadi. The Secretary and Foreign Minister discussed a range of bilateral and regional issues, including the Iranian regime’s ongoing attacks on shipping and against countries in the region.”

Pigott said Rubio condemned Iran’s actions and thanked Jordan for its contribution to regional security.

The meeting came amid heightened tensions between the United States and Iran in recent days. US forces have carried out strikes on Iranian targets after Iran fired on several ships that the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps accused of violating transit rules in the Strait of Hormuz. Tehran later responded with attacks targeting US military bases in the region.
