Houthis announce death of 2 officers in clashes with government forces

The Houthis announced on Saturday that two of their officers were killed by Yemeni government forces amid continuing military escalation between the two sides, Anadolu reports.

The Houthi-run Saba news agency said Maj. Gen. Hassan Mutahhar and Col. Mohammed al-Ghathi were laid to rest in the capital Sanaa.

The agency provided no further details about the circumstances or location of their deaths.

Yemeni government forces have yet to comment on the announcement.

Military tensions between government forces and the Houthis have intensified in recent weeks. The Houthis have controlled several provinces and cities, including the capital Sanaa, since September 2014.

While the government forces are backed by a Saudi-led coalition, Iran is accused of supporting the Houthis, who announced a maritime blockade of Saudi Arabia in July.
