The UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) on Thursday affirmed its commitment to engaging with the new leadership of Libya’s House of Representatives and all its members to advance the political roadmap toward holding elections, Anadolu reports.
The statement came in response to the election earlier this week of Al-Salihin Abdul Nabi Al-Obaidi as speaker of Libya’s House of Representatives, succeeding Aguila Saleh.
The mission said it followed an earlier session attended by 102 members, with 98 voting in favor of amending the House’s internal regulations and establishing a rotating presidency for the chamber for a maximum term of 12 months.
It added that a second session held the following day, with the participation of 111 members, saw the election of a new leadership for the House of Representatives.
It said it would “continue working with the legislative institution to advance the political roadmap facilitated by the United Nations.”

The mission said the aim was to unify state institutions, implement urgent reforms and hold elections within the timeframe stipulated in the agreement reached by the mini-dialogue committee in August.
Last week, the 4+4 mini-dialogue committee signed an agreement at the UN mission’s headquarters in Tripoli to hold elections within 24 months.
The committee comprises four members representing the Government of National Unity and four representing the eastern Libya-based military leadership.
The 4+4 committee has been holding UN-sponsored talks since April 2026 to break the political deadlock and advance implementation of the UN roadmap, particularly on elections and the unification of executive authority.
Libyans hope long-awaited elections will end political and armed conflicts and bring an end to successive transitional periods that have continued since the ouster of Muammar Gaddafi’s regime in 2011.
