UN Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs Rosemary DiCarlo on Friday warned that the conflict in Sudan continues to deteriorate, with no breakthrough in sight, as civilians face relentless fighting, a deepening humanitarian crisis and severe economic hardship, Anadolu reports.
Addressing a Security Council meeting on Sudan, DiCarlo said little had changed since her previous briefings this year, stressing that the Sudanese people continue to endure the devastating consequences of the war, including the collapse of basic services.
“Regrettably, today I can report that little has changed. The people of Sudan continue to face the brutal reality of conflict, enduring relentless fighting, a worsening humanitarian crisis, severe economic hardship, and the collapse of basic services,” she said.
DiCarlo also expressed concern over the deteriorating security situation along Sudan’s borders, warning that the conflict is affecting neighboring countries, several of which are already grappling with significant instability and other crises.
“We urge all actors to avoid any acts that could result in conflict spilling over across borders. Preventing a wider regional crisis must remain our collective priority,” she said.

Rather than moving toward dialogue, the parties appear to believe they can achieve further gains on the battlefield, she said, adding that continued external support could be encouraging them to pursue their objectives through force.
DiCarlo highlighted the diplomatic efforts of UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy for Sudan Pekka Haavisto, who remains in regular contact with the parties to advance confidence-building measures.
According to DiCarlo, these efforts aim to rebuild trust, encourage more constructive engagement between the sides and deliver tangible benefits to the Sudanese people.
DiCarlo called on the Security Council to make full use of the tools at its disposal to help end the conflict, stressing that Sudan’s population deserves peace and a credible path toward a better future.
“The Sudanese people have endured unimaginable suffering. They deserve peace and a credible path toward a better future.
“And once again, I call on the council to use every tool at its disposal to help bring this devastating conflict to an end,” she said.
Sudan has been engulfed in civil war between the army and the Rapid Support Forces since April 2023, leaving tens of thousands dead and displacing millions of others.
