A year after El Fasher was overrun, the atrocities committed there continue to draw international scrutiny, as reports document the scale of serious violations by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) following their takeover of the city.

The RSF is a Sudanese paramilitary force led by Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, known as Hemedti, which has been fighting the Sudanese army, led by General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, since April 2023.

The city’s fall came after a year-long siege marked by starvation and widespread atrocities.

As reports of abuses and systematic crimes continue to emerge, Hemedti’s forces face mounting pressure at international forums over the suffering inflicted on victims in Darfur and the political and military consequences of their actions.

El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur state, was one of the bloodiest battlegrounds of Sudan’s war. Its fall marked a major turning point in the conflict.
