Democrat Abdul El-Sayed took aim at US President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance during his election victory speech in Michigan early Wednesday, after defeating Republican Mike Rogers in the US Senate race, Anadolu reports.
El-Sayed made history as the first Muslim American elected to the US Senate, securing the seat previously held by retiring Democratic Senator Gary Peters.
Addressing supporters, El-Sayed mocked Vance over the vice president’s constitutional role in administering the oath of office to newly elected senators.
“JD, habibi, there is this delicious irony in the fact that you’re constitutionally obligated to swear me in in January,” he said.

Beginning his speech with “Michigan, we did it!” El-Sayed expressed pride in his election and thanked supporters for their role in the campaign.
He also criticized the amount of money spent against his candidacy, claiming that opponents had spent $350 million in an unsuccessful effort to defeat him.
He celebrated the result by declaring that “the bad guys lost” and pledged to serve the people of Michigan.
