Alia Mohamed, the daughter of Mohamed Mahdi Akef, former General-Guide of the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt, announced this evening the death of her detained father at Qasr el-Eyni Hospital.
A statement posted on Alia’s Facebook page read: “My father has passed away. To Allah, we belong, and to Him, we shall return.”
The former Muslim Brotherhood leader has been in poor health for some time but it rapidly declined after his detention by the Sisi regime in 2013. In July 2017, Egypt’s ministry of interior denied reports circulating on news websites and social media platforms about the death of Akef. The ministry noted that he has been treated at Qasr el-Eyni Hospital and that his condition was stable.
Shortly after his arrest, Akef was moved to al-Maadi Military Hospital in Cairo in September 2013. He was then returned to prison on 25 June 2015.
Recently, Akef has moved between his prison in Cairo and Qasr al-Eyni Hospital, where there is a special section for prisoners before his transfer to the French Qasr el-Eyni Hospital.
Mahdi Akef’s mistreatment is due to his position as a former General-Guide of the Muslim Brotherhood. He took over the position after the death of his predecessor Ma’amun al-Hudaybi in January 2004. He was succeeded by Dr Mohammed Badie after he finished his last term and declared his unwillingness to continue as the movement’s General-Guide.
