Gaza Resumes Sporting Activities

January 24, 2014 at 1:59 am

Sports activities in the Gaza Strip resumed two months ago following the most recent Israeli military escalation against the region in November of last year. During last year’s attacks, several sports playing fields were devastated by rocket fire.

The Sports Ministry has endeavoured to regain its strength as quickly as possible and has managed to restore the Yarmouk Sports Field which is one of the most famous playing grounds in the Strip. They have also managed to organise and hold a number of games since the reconstruction, including the Super League, and to resume other regular sporting activities.

However, there is a continuing crisis as a result of the destruction which has a particular impact on the sporting activities of those with special needs and disabilities. The destruction of playing fields in the centre of Gaza City constitutes an on-going obstacle to sports people taking part in league football tournaments, championships, Paralympic games and other activities.
