International Legal Team to present initial findings of Crimes against Humanity perpetrated by Egyptian regime following the coup in July

January 30, 2014 at 10:00 am

Below is a statement from the legal team:

Members of the press are invited to attend a press conference to be held at 12 noon on Saturday 16th November 2013 at the Hilton Hotel, Edgware Road, London.

In July 2013 the Egyptian military led a coup d’état against the democratically elected government of Egypt which resulted in the detention of the President and members of the Government of Egypt. In the days after the coup the military regime used force to remove civilians who gathered to protest against the coup. Many Egyptian civilians lost their lives and many more were injured during this time.

As a result of actions taken by the military regime the Egypt’s Freedom and Justice Party (FJP) and members of the Shura Council (the Upper House of the Egyptian Parliament) appointed an international legal team to advise on the unlawful detention of members of the Government and to investigate criminal acts that had been comitted by the military regime.

At the press conference the members of the legal team will detail the evidence gathered during their investigation which shows a prima facie case that the military, police and political members of the military regime have committed crimes against humanity perpetrated against Egyptian civilians protesting against the coup.

The legal team is led by Tayab Ali, solicitor and partner of leading human rights law firm ITN Solicitor and comprises some of the world’s most distinguished legal minds. It includes the former Director of Public Prosecutions, Lord Ken Macdonald QC, South African International Lawyer and former UN Human Rights Special Rapporteur, Professor John Dugard SC, and renowned human rights barrister, Michael Mansfield QC.
