The President of the International Committee of the Red Cross visited the Gaza Strip on Tuesday. Peter Maurer met Palestinian Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh as well as the families of prisoners being held by Israel.

The ICRC chief also visited a centre producing artificial limbs during his stay in the beleaguered territory. The centre offers hope and support to those who have lost limbs during Israel’s attacks on Gaza and are unable to go abroad for treatment and the fitting of prosthetic limbs due to the Israeli-led siege.

In his meeting with prisoners’ families, Mr Maurer listened to their concerns and requests for the ICRC to work towards easing the suffering of the prisoners and bringing about an end to the use of solitary confinement as a punishment by the Israelis.
