Turkish president tells Egypt to remember Syria

January 30, 2014 at 11:31 am

Turkey’s President Abdullah Gul has told the people of Egypt to remember how the conflict in Syria began as they contemplate the massacre in Cairo’s Rabaa Al-Adawiyya Square on Wednesday.

Commenting on the security forces’ violent break-up of the anti-coup protests, Gul said, “I hope everyone remembers how the events of our neighbouring country Syria began, how the security forces began to fire on civilians and how events developed and escalated thereafter.”

All Egyptians should consider how such things should happen in a democracy, he added. “I do not even want to imagine such developments in Egypt, given its prestigious position at the heart of the Arab world.”
