British PM resigns as patron of the Jewish National Fund

January 31, 2014 at 12:49 am

According to a pro-Palestinian organisation in the UK, British Prime Minister, David Cameron, has stepped down as a patron of the Jewish National Fund [JNF] following assertions that the JNF had played a role in the ethnic cleansing of Palestinians during the Nakba or Palestinian Catastrophe, 63 years ago.

The Stop the JNF Campaign added that David Cameron had quietly ended his affiliation as an honorary sponsor of the JNF and that Downing Street had confirmed the move.

“This decline in political support for the JNF at the highest levels of the political tree may be a sign of the increasing awareness in official quarters that a robust defence of the activities of the JNF may not be sustainable,” said the Stop the JNF Campaign spokesperson Dick Pitt.

The Campaign considered Cameron’s withdrawal another victory on the road to securing justice and freedom for the Palestinians. It asserted that the JNF had played a role in the ethnic cleansing of 500 Palestinian villages during the Nakba highlighting that it continues to play a role in displacing Palestinians from their lands and seizing their property. It also accused the JNF of establishing the British Park inside pre-1948 borders on the remains of two Palestinian villages – Ajjur and Zakariya, which were destroyed in 1948 and their inhabitants displaced.

Jewish sources have stated that the Stop the JNF Campaign was behind Cameron’s resignation from this honorary patronage. The Jewish Chronicle newspaper, which is published in the UK, reported that the Campaign had sent a letter to Cameron urging him to resign just 12 days before he stepped down as patron.
