Peres and Netanyahu hold talks with European leaders on Freedom Flotilla 2

January 31, 2014 at 12:49 am

Israel’s President Shimon Peres and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu are visiting a number of European countries to hold talks with political leaders about Freedom Flotilla 2, which will sail to Gaza in mid-May. Radio Israel reported that Netanyahu is in Europe on 6 April for talks in Germany and the Czech Republic; the Gaza-bound international aid convoy will be on the agenda.

The Israeli leaders want to stress their view that it is important to block the flotilla because they believe that its organizers have political, not humanitarian, objectives. Peres opened his tour last week with visits to Switzerland and Britain; he is currently in the United States.

Political sources in Israel highlight the recent seizure of a Gaza-bound freighter that was carrying weapons and was intercepted by the Israeli Navy in the Mediterranean. This, they claim, makes it imperative to stop Freedom Flotilla 2 from reaching the shores of the Gaza Strip.
